Lets add to your little analogy that the "also ran" company which "none of us would work for" was started and run by your family. Then the question becomes one more of loyalty to what you should hold dear, not one about the money.

if i had to pick between italy and US...Id pick the US of A anyday! Cuz unlike some of you people, not everyone is a glory hunter. Some people just love this country that much that they would be honored to represent this fine nation. Money and travel should have minimal implications.
