Arena Wants To Invade British Football

Bruce Arena image for The Offside Rules

The Bruce is going to put his name in the hat for the vacant Scotland manager job. Huh.

I'm not really sure how I feel about this one. Obviously I wish he was still at NYRB but since that ain't happening I guess i just wish him all the best. And if that is a job leading the Tartan Army then so be it. But do you think that they anyone in British football would hire an American as head coach of a national team or an EPL side for that matter?

That's the $10 million question and I think it's the soccer equivalent to whether or not America is ready to elect a woman or a minority to the White House. We've come a long way in global competition, and are now fairly common throughout the British leagues but are the inventors of the game ready to take direction from someone whose people have been looked down upon for so long?

I don't claim to know but would love to start a dialog on the topic. Hit me up in the comments, and I'll hit you back (I promise not to leave a bruise).

Stunned doesn't begin to describe my emotions about this one. As a big Tartan Army fan, I hope they get the best person for the job, but is that Bruce Arena? On the plus side, he has taken the US MNT to farther in the World Cup than any Scottish side has gone, the debacle in Germany notwithstanding. Still, I think the mental leap of having an American in charge over there will be huge, possibly too huge, to overcome. I find it hard to believe that anyone other than a Scot will land that job, but there doesn't seem to be a line forming outside the SFA offices, so why not il Bruce?

What, he's too much of a puss to man up for the England gig?

The thing with Bruce is that he's kinda no nonsense and I think the Scots would appreciate that. As for the England job...yeah right.

I don't think it is an unreasonable proposition, but I think that there is no way in hell the Scots hire an American manager. I think il Bruce is unfortunately delusional about his current viability in the European market. He should be looking at some Caribbean nat'l team. Maybe he could lead Grenada out against the USMNT!

Can Claudio Reyna trace any Scottish heritage?

No way. Especially now, when Scottish football pride is at a very high point, the Scots will choose one of our own. The oddsmakers say Mark McGhee, but I think he's a bit young. But Arena? No chance.

Will not happen. Coming off their Euro qualifying run this would feel like a backwards step for them. They've got too much pride.

It probably wouldn't happen because the Scots are, incredibly, even more generally resistant to hiring a foreign coach than the English. However, I agree with the comment about him taking the US national team much further in the World Cup than the Scots could ever hope for. Could be a great choice if they think outside the box.
