The Consigliare Says Stay Away from San Jose

Oakland A's owner Lew Wolff says that he needs to know in the next 30 days if MLS will grant him a franchise for the 2008 season, even without firm stadium plans. Not that he has asked me but I am going to act as Consigliare to The Don on this one.

My simple advice, don't do it Don. As much as many people would like to see a return to the bay area and an even number of teams, stand strong Don…don't buckle. We're already going down this road of non-commitment with our friends out in Utah and look at what a saga that has been.

If I were you I'd run this thing like you would run a backroom card game in a strip joint: be strict on your ante requirements and show these cats that are interested in getting into our game that you are 100% for real…$30 million and a deed to their own house. Not just plans and an appointment with a loan officer, you want to see closing papers in hand!

All due respect, but why can Houston, K.C., D.C. all play without a stadium plan in place. I agree generally that a stadium should be a requirement but San Jose should be the exception, it's fans having undeservedly been victimized by the business aspects of MLS.
